Why essential oil substitutions aren’t ideal

And what to do instead

Just like we each have our own unique fingerprint, every essential oil carries its own distinct properties and energetic signature. While it may be tempting to substitute oils in blends, doing so can significantly alter the intended effects.

In my recent YouTube video, I dive into the concept of essential oil substitutions and why they are not always the best choice when working with carefully crafted blends.

Why substitutions don’t always work

Essential oil substitutions might seem like a convenient solution when you are missing an oil from a blend recipe, but there are several reasons why this approach can be problematic.

Unique chemical profiles. Each plant produces oils with a specific chemical makeup, developed over millions of years of evolution.

Energetic signatures. Beyond chemistry, oils have distinct energetic properties that cannot be replicated by similar-smelling alternatives.

Spiritual and emotional effects. The impact an oil has on our emotions and spiritual well-being is unique to that particular plant.

Synergistic relationships. Oils in a blend are carefully chosen to work together, and changing one can disrupt the entire synergy.

Think of essential oil blends like phone numbers. If you change even one digit, you are calling an entirely different person.

When substitutions might work

There are rare instances where substitutions can be somewhat effective.

Oils from the same plant family may have some overlapping properties.

In simple blends for basic purposes — general relaxation, for instance — some substitutions might be acceptable.

However, for targeted emotional work, spiritual practices, or addressing specific health concerns, it is best to stick with the original blend recipe.

Alternatives to substitutions

Instead of trying to substitute oils, consider these alternatives.

Expand your collection. Gradually build your essential oil library to have a wider range of options available.

Use what you have. Create simpler blends with the oils you do have on hand.

Learn about oil properties. Deepen your understanding of each oil’s unique characteristics to make more informed blending decisions.

Consult an expert. When in doubt, reach out to a qualified aromatherapist or essential oil expert for guidance.

The importance of intention in blending

When I create essential oil blends, every oil is chosen with intention, according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each component plays a specific role in achieving the desired outcome. By respecting the original recipe and the wisdom behind it, you are more likely to experience the full benefits of the blend.
