What is Elemental Medicine?
This is a term I use often to describe the type of medicine that I practice. I am a student and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, as well as a student and practitioner of Astrology. At the core of these disciplines - they aim to describe the way energy moves within our body, mind, and spirit via the core Elements we find in nature. There are particular qualities and characteristics of energies that live within us and all around us, and those particular qualities are represented by the Elements of Fire, Earth, Water, Metal, Wood, and Air. When we allow the Elements to freely circulate the way they are meant to, and in a harmonious fashion, then we find health and healing.
Elemental
primary or basic; related to or embodying the powers of nature
Medicine
the science or practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease
Elemental Medicine is a system of medicine that recognizes the importance of the Elements in maintaining health and balance in the body, mind, and spirit. They diagnose, treat, and prevent disease by addressing the balance and relationship of Elements we find in nature. This includes Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Air. Whether it is Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine, Native American Medicine, or Astrology, they all use the Elements to understand and treat various health conditions as well as maintain health to achieve well-being. Some systems use 4 Elements, and some systems use 5 Elements. They are all valid and complete systems in and of themselves. No need to fight that one system is better than the other - they all reflect the truths of nature and are all valid.
I practice Astrology, which has four main Elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), and Chinese Medicine, which has five main Elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood). If you take a close look, you can see how they overlay and parallel each other. I find that the Wood Element in Chinese Medicine functions much like the Air Element in Astrology. I also find that the Metal Element in Chinese Medicine is infused into the Earth Element in Astrology.
The Elements
Wisdom is found in nature, and we are made of nature; therefore, we are not separate from nature.
Our body is a microcosm of the Earth. Observing natural phenomena gives us clues and insights into how our bodies function.
No matter what system you choose, I recommend utilizing some system of Elemental Medicine to help you understand the dynamics of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Metal, and Wood within your being. It’s when these Elements are in excess or deficiency that we see problems arise. You don’t need wildfires, floods, or droughts in your body and spirit. We want all Elements to express themselves in a healthy fashion, neither in their wild excesses nor in their emptiness.
Nature has the clues and the answers to what ails us. She can help interpret the imbalances we experience and correct the extremes to bring us back to wholeness and stability.
